When January's father dies, she finds out he has been having an affair and even worse, her mother knew about it and didn't tell her. Broke, stuck in a difficult conversation with her mum, recently single and in need of some inspiration to write her next novel - January temporarily goes to stay in her Dad's other home. There she meets Augustus Everitt again, the sexy guy who she knew at college and who now writes intellectual books, much better than her silly romances. When it turns out he also has writer's block, they decide to swap genres and teach each other the different aspects of what makes that genre.
This (can you believe) is my first Emily Henry! It's been on my shelf for two years and I finally picked it up. Unpopular opinion possibly, but I didn't love this as much as I expected to. Whilst EH's writing style is great and had me laughing. I found this a little dull. For me, the chemistry between the two MCs was virtually non existent, and not a lot really happened? It dragged a bit for me. I was sitting on a 3 star rating, but I enjoyed the last 10% which bumped it up to a 4. I'm looking forward to trying another of her novels, this was ok but I hope I prefer her others more!

I’d give this one a 3.5 ⭐️ it was cute and sweet, but I felt like I didn’t get to know January well enough. I liked the content and the deep topics they covered such as grief, loss, and perceptions of love. The reader got to get inside Gus’ head really thoroughly through January, but I just don’t feel like I knew January herself outside of her emotions about her father and Gus. Their banter was cute and there were sweet moments, but the book didn’t quite “wow” me or pull me in as other rom-coms have in the past.

Solid rom com, maybe my fav in this genre. Fun, not too cheesy, really liked the characters.

This book was my first romance novel. I really enjoyed Emily Henry's writing and enjoyed how there was more personality in the characters than just falling in love (trauma, friendships, etc.). I'm excited to read her other 2 books as well :)
