there are so many books that are on my TBR that i’m not quite sure who said what to make me add them. so many books i don’t even know a thing about but they’re there so at some point past-me wanted to read them. that means that there’s a lot of books i pick up that i am going into blind.

this was a wild book to go into blind ಥ‿ಥ

first of all, please make sure you’re reading trigger warnings if you need to. this book is about a necrophile that meets a baby eater and is so stupid messed up. what was i even expecting once i started reading it?

it was an easy enough read, ignoring the subject matter, and kind of amusing in parts - but i wasn’t even halfway through the book before i was well over being reminded that he fucks dead girls and she eats dead babies. I GET IT. i get it, i got it when it was first mentioned. it’s honestly every other page that it’s mentioned.

i had to DNF this one though, it got to a point that was just unnecessary to be honest.

this is just like. shock factor porn for edgy incels. i wanted it to be more because i’m so desensitised and want something that will make me recoil and uncomfortable, and while the subject matter itself is enough to do that the writing is just so.. cringey? (“so I figured I’d bite the bullet and just do it, Nike-style” LIKE CMON) and i hate that word. i don’t know. this could have been so fucked up and engaging but instead it was just fucked up and embarrassing. so many of the positive reviews for this book stem from ‘well it’s fucked up and appalling because that’s the point!’ yes we know, but that doesn’t mean we don’t also deserve good writing and an actual plot over just the same gore porn for however many pages. extreme horror can be good! this is unfortunately not an example of that.

I’d heard a lot of great things about this book, so I ended up giving it a shot. Once you get past the edgelord bullshit, it reads like an ultraviolent satire on normalcy, addiction, and the futile desire to be “unique.” There’s only one particular section I… skipped… but I could feel it was probably coming and was on the lookout for it.  I only have a handful of “hard limits”, but this book managed to hit one or two of them.

Overall, trying to be as objective as possible, I think it was mediocre, edging on bad. Could do without  the Try-Hard edginess, but I think there actually *was* a decent, intriguing love story hidden inside the shock value. I would not recommend this book to any other living soul.

Somehow I’m more upset by the MC’s “I’m not like other girls” vibe, throwing fits when called normal or told he still unfortunately is a part of society than by his nefarious deeds.
