perfect timing i finished this book on international women's day, and it’s about patriarchy, womanhood, motherhood, and bodily autonomy. if i had to describe it in one word, it would be uncomfortable, but it is the normal and everyday uncomfortable that i as a woman and every woman feels.
the story is a slow burn, but i could relate to so much of it, even though it’s set in japan. throughout the book, it shows situations that happen to women, which might seem normal in everyday life but are actually quite traumatic because the book reveals how women are treated in japanese society, and it’s not good. we learn about the struggles they face in trying to have a voice, stand their ground, and be given equality in such a patriarchal society. it really reflects real life, especially for women who feel trapped by societal expectations. and reading this made me think a lot, and even after finishing, i kept questioning "am i truly free to be myself, or am i just stuck in these social expectations?"
hands down of my favorite part in the second section which here’s a lot of discussion about what it means to have a child and what it means to be a woman whether with children or childfree. also the characters deal with and try to escape the misogyny that surrounds them.
the writing is super detailed, but at times some parts felt wordy and slowed the pacing down made a bit boring at times, which is why i can’t rate it higher. however, i will definitely be rereading it again. It is one of those books that will continually change meaning depending on the context of the reader at any given point. and i think men might have a different perception of the book because they don’t experience what women go through every day. it’s just different for them. i’d be really interested to know what men think of this book.

tbh too long, and i don’t know what the original is like but the translation feels stilted to me. but there are some moments in here that i absolutely love too, mostly the surreal breaks from reality, and the egg scene at the end of part 1

I enjoyed the whole book as I liked the story and I think I actually learnt things from it but I thought that the ending was slightly underwhelming
