The stories selection was good, the classic choices for an Anderson collection. The illustrations were wonderful and the interactive elements were fun even though I wish there were more. I'd say the stories are still aging well in themselves (although they definitely happen in a time with different chore values). I wouldn't read all these stories to a child (especially The Swineherd which is creepy and the moral is slut shaming) but it's a great fairytale book nonetheless. My favorite was The Nightingale

These are some screwed up stories. I much prefer Jax's Cinderella Snapped.

Of course, everybody knows about this story.

It was a bit different from the modern adaptations, however. It was, of course, much more brutal and there was more emphasis on gaining a soul. The writing was honestly more beautiful than I expected, though the ending was a little dragged out. While it is definitely a bit deranged (she gave up her life for a guy she met once and practically assaulted him), I still think it's a classic worth reading.

Before this, the fairy tales I had read were all rewrites. While the originals are not the most interesting read, it was neat seeing how different authors changed them up.
