Fantatic character intros

Three stunningly great short stories that introduce us to Finn, Rey, and Poe. These stories are highly engaging and I love how elegantly they lead up to The Force Awakens. A must-read for any fan of Episode VII!
funny hopeful lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

I don't know if the author knew this when writing the book, but "j*ryr*gged" is a slur.

If you enjoyed The Force Awakens and wamt to know a little more about Finn, Rey, and Poe you should read this book. Greg Rucka is one of my favorite authors, in both comics and prose, and he doesn't disappoint with this book. A great addition to the new Star Wars canon.

A fantastic addition to the new canon Star Wars books. This takes a look at the lives of the three new heroes in The Force Awakens in the days and weeks leading up to where the movie begins. Each character gets their own short story.

In terms of the writing and content, this is considered middle grade to early young adult (think young people around grades 5 to 8). I read a lot of children's and young adult literature, so for me that is not a concern at all. Given the recent adult fiction new canon book I've recently read (Aftermath), the middle grade and young adult novels are knocking it out of the park between this book and Claudia Gray's Lost Stars.

Here's why I loved this book so much as an adult fan of Star Wars:
FINN: we see what his stormtrooper training was like under Captain Phasma and what started to plant those seeds of doubt
REY:we see why she is able to fly ships on sight as well as she can and why she also understands the inner-workings of ship mechanics
POE: we see why he started flying for the Resistance and why Leia trusts him so much (plus a nod to Lor San Tekka at the end!)

Very enjoyable new addition to the saga!

3.75 stars.

2/5: Finns story
4/5: Reys story
3.5/5: Poes story

I looooooooved the short stories so much, my favorite by far was poe's story. Well, maybe because he was my favorite anyway, but still.

Felt like a very good prequel/set up to the movies especially on the backstory and insight of the main characters in Force Awakening. It felt awesome to see the heroes of the orignal trilogy pop up again,

I did not think it was possible to love Finn and Rey and Poe more, but here we are. Here I am, clutching this book to my chest, clawing at my face* with an excess of love. If you enjoyed the new Star Wars and the new trio, read it. If you didn't, well. What are you even doing here?

*I am not actually clawing at my face. I may, however, have actually hugged the book.
