This is a good trio of stories fleshing out the lives of Finn, Rey and Poe in the period immediately preceding the events of The Force Awakens, and is essential for answering a lot of the picky questions posed by skeptics regarding Rey's piloting skills and Finn's readiness for hand-to-hand combat with a lightsaber wielding Jedi (short answer: months - years, even - of training and explicit practice before the cameras started recording their lives). Poe's story provides a nice link up between the Shattered Empire comic and Force Awakens. None of the big reveals from Force Awakens are given away here, so it's a worthwhile little read before seeing the movie for those who haven't yet. And I just love that Greg Rucka is a leading writer in the new Star Wars storytelling empire.

This was surprisingly brilliant. By a large margin the best of the new Star Wars books I've read so far. And I mean okay it's basically fanfic about what each of the three main characters were doing just before the movie starts, but, that's fine. And oh my god, look at this, there is lots of depth to the universe t hat t he movie just didn't bother with.

I wonder how the next film is going to handle world-building, given the first movie and JJ Abrams didn't bother with any of that stuff.

I loved the short stories that give more insight to each character. The movies really did Finn injustice. His character was much more of a leader than a comical side character to the Star Wars franchise. I know with Poe’s story, it branches into his comic book series. Loved it all

Some solid background stories here for the characters of The Force Awakens. I’ll take it as further proof that no matter how good a movie may be they never seem to match the pictures one can develop in their heads with through the power of words.
Ok there might be some hyperbole there in the case of these stories. They were good, but not Earth-shattering. Still real Star Wars fans really should read some books to go with the movies. They make them so much better.

Wonderful place to start

Rey's background is so tragic. I love reading about Finn and the culture of the F.O. Poe's story was the least interesting just because it was more of his daring adventures, but it was still entertaining.

great prequel to the film, setting up the background for the three new heroes and giving a window into their lives. particularly liked Rey's story. :)

I liked Rey's story the best.

That was it; there was nothing else. Just the silence, the cold, and the need to be patient.

Finn and Rey stories are OK, but Poe Dameron's is really worth the read.

Very fun read. Finn's section was pretty interesting considering how it shed some light on First Order training, but Poe’s was my favorite since it was straight military sci-fi. I love all of Rey's ingenuity as well, and the exploration of the massive ways in which people have screwed her.
