I'm left asking... why be subtle?

It was alright, had some good points, but overall kind of a beginner self-help book. I already knew most of the tips they provided

I described this book as the anti-self help book in a sense. The voice of Mark Manson reminds me of a Deadpool esque character, self aware and and commanding of those who read this particular book. Although the title suggests to live a carefree life, he suggests living a life that is rooting in choice. Choosing what to care about and what not to care about, especially given our limited time to make these choices in our lives. My key takeaways here are rooted in advice about relationships (both romantic and non romantic) and anecdotes about musicians and war heroes who chose what to dedicate their lives to and whether or not their values synced with the roles they chose. The lingering sentiment of this book is a somber one but one that I appreciate given the absolute hilarity that Mark Manson delivers chapter upon chapter of.

This was one of the first books I ever read (it's been ages since then) but it still stands out for its distinct tone. The sarcastic, cynical voice makes the book surprisingly easy and enjoyable to read.

While the author makes some genuinely insightful points, especially around values, responsibility, and choosing what to care about, the book can feel repetitive at times. It circles back to the same core ideas more often than necessary.

It’s not life-changing, but it can definitely provide a few useful perspectives, especially if you're early in your personal growth journey.
