Ok I have a lot of thoughts but I was weirded out/disappointed by the ending.

i don’t like low rating but i have to give it a 1.5 stars

So to begin with, the characters. Anastasia is full of anger, doesn’t hesitate to voice her displeasement and good for her. But sometimes, as much as I tried to understand her POV and why she reacts this way, well I couldn’t understand and she just annoyed me. I was like, girl stop talking you’re so freaking annoying. For Nate, well, if you ask me to describe him I will tell you “good question”. He has NO personality. Okay he’s nice and sweet sometimes, but that’s about it. I literally cannot say anything more about him since there’s nothing to say. At least with Anastasia and her reactions the story is spiced up but with Nate? Booooring. Wanna know what else is boring? The whole plot. Actually, there’s not even a plot. Nothing is happening, the story is bland and pointless. Or actually yes, there were things happening, too many subplots for nothing. How can there be so much going on without anything really happening? I was bored all along and wondered when it would end. When Aaron fell and broke his wrist or whatever and accused Nate, things got a bit interesting, but it didn’t last because soon after I was bored as hell again. The book is almost 500 pages… What for???? It’s lacking in development -whether it’s the plot or characters or romance (I’ll get to it in a few)- and twists. Sure, sometimes it’s good to have stories with no real plot, just slice of life and cute romance, but Icebreaker doesn’t even have that !!

I FORGOT TO TALK ABOUT THE SIDE CHARACTERS. One of the only positive aspects of this book is that I really enjoyed their little group and their complicity. We can see that they all appreciate one another and that’s nice. But first of all, there are too many characters and for a story like that it’s bad in my opinion and uninteresting. There were too many names and at some point I was like, but who’s that? Qui est William? Donc lui c’est William? Et lui ce n’est pas William? Who is who???? And not only are there too many characters, the story is also heavily focused on them. Like, I wondered if I was reading a book on Anastasia’s and Nate’s romance or if I was reading a book on the daily life at a frat house. It’s nice to get to know the side characters a little bit but there it was too much and when I read a romance book I personally do not give a shit about the side characters.

Going back to the plot, the fact that both teams have to share the ice rink is actually a subplot because we see them share the rink like three times. The whole thing around Nate becoming Anastasia’s partner the time Aaron gets better… It’s introduced like half the book in so it’s useless?? At that time of the story Anastasia and Nate already had something going on so it’s pointless and really not interesting to see him team up with her. It’s just a friend helping a friend. At first I thought that they would become partners at the beginning of the book and that their relationship would build from that, but not at all. Also we never got to really understand Aaron’s motivation to why he did that, it was unresolved and I wish the toxic relation Anastasia and Aaron had were more developed so as Anastasia struggling with eating disorders.
AND omg I almost forgot, when Anastasia drowns and almost dies??? It is SO random like- ??? She drowns, Nate saves her, she goes to the hospital for three lines and that’s it, but literally what was the point? So out of the blue.

Now, their romance -or lack of romance, if I may. Their relationship is literally just sexual. I have nothing against that but I do believe these types of things need to be on Wattpad and AO3 and not on a published book. Basically, there’s no tension between them and no building, they just fuck one night, and then they keep fucking, then when Aaron is being an asshole Anastasia stays at his house, then one day she calls him ‘boyfriend’, then they’re dating. Ok but… literally where is the romance?? There are no dates to the restaurant or cinema or they don’t go shopping or go on a walk together or whatever, there’s nothing. It’s supposed to be a romance book but there’s no romance, make it makes sense.
And also the epilogue was???? I pretend it does not exist.

Conclusion, there’s no development for the characters as individuals, no development in their relationship, no development in the plot. Too many subplots which makes you think there’s a story but there isn’t actually. I do believe the book would have been much better if it was shorter. I hate it but I forced myself to finish my reading only so that I can give a review on the entirety of the book. Anyway, as Philippe Etchebest said: “quelle perte de temps, quelle perte d'énergie.”

Maybe I’m not in the right frame if mine to read this, but god is this book boring. It started off strong and cute but then went downhill. The college drama is trivial and for a sports book, there’s not a lot of sports in it. This is a poor mix of the cutting edge and the lake scene from dirty dancing, only in a pool. Yea the MCM has a dirty mouth but that’s it. There isn’t really any tension, there is not character building. I kept trying just to power through but I have too many other books on my TBR to waste time on this unimaginative college romance. TikTok did me dirty with all the undue hype on this one.

Was NOT expecting it to be so SPICY!!
