I was torn on what to rate this book. The content was fascinating and compelling, and a real dive into a side of Italy I really didn’t know much about. But about halfway through the book it started to get harder to bring myself to read it. Some of the chapters were so long, with no breaks, and mostly seemed to just be mentioning names. The lack of a narrative or driving to a specific point made it a bit unfulfilling to read as it went. Maybe the reading itself would have been more enjoyable in Italian.
Overall I still enjoyed the book. 4 stars for the content, 3 for the reading itself, so I’m going with 3.5 stars.

It took me a while to read this book but it was not for lack of interest or desire to read it. I really liked this book. I bought it in Italian when I was studying abroad in Italy some years ago but I did not pick it up again until I saw it in a Borders going-out-of-business sale (in English).
If you are interested in knowing about how the Camorra (Naples based organized crime) works then this is the book for you. The content is sometimes shocking, many times sad and just all around eye opening. I will say it is not always an easy read, perhaps because of the fact that it’s translated from Italian, but still worth it in my opinion. I could have given it a four star rating for the lack of flow on occasion but the subject matter/content allows me to overlook this problem. If you are a lover of organized crime info like myself then you will like this book’s gritty exposition of life in Naples and its surrounding areas.

Gomorra trata los problemas sociales en el territorio de Camorra en Napoles, Italia. En la zona se encuentran varias industrias mafiosas, como la de la moda, la de venta de drogas, entre otras. Todo esto provoca que sus habitantes convivan con asesinatos a diario, aumento la cifra de víctimas diarias, y que toda la población esté involucrada en la red distribuidora.
Vamos a empezar claro, es un señor librazo. Tengo que decir que yo ya había visto la serie así que quizás el factor sorpresa no lo he obtenido, pero decir que tanto la narración como el mundo real que describe el autor con su experiencia en Camorra, no deja de ser escalofriante y fascinante a partes iguales.
El valor del autor al relatar esta historia no deja de ser asombroso, como sabéis, después de publicar la obra y convertirse en best seller, Roberto Saviano tuvo que mudarse en Italia por las constantes amenazas de muerte y también han decidido proporcionarle seguridad de por vida. Fue tan grande la magnitud de desvelo de esta obra que la mafia actuó intentando atacar al autor personalmente en numerosas ocasiones.
Entre sus páginas encontramos relatos de cómo las personas estaban tan acostumbradas a ver cadáveres que incluso discutían sobre si es mejor un disparo en el corazón o en la cabeza. O como los comerciantes no se extrañaban al ver disparos en la fachada de su tienda. Una dura realidad y cruda muy bien narrada que no pierde el ritmo en ningún momento.
Recomiendo leer este libro no solo por su condición de best seller sino porque es una apertura más realista de la mafia italiana de lo que vemos en el Padrino, que no deja de ser ficción, de hecho, siendo una gran película como es, en este libro se desvela un detalle que Mario Puzo no tuvo en cuenta y que es muy interesante. Debéis poner este libro entre vuestras manos, os lo aseguro.

El estilo de Saviano no me gustó mucho, pero los hechos y las cifras que rodean a la Camorra son impactantes.

Non è un libro facile, Saviano ha una scrittura carica, metaforica e retorica, ma personalmente trovo che sia perfetta per descrivere l’ambiente, i luoghi, le persone che vuole rappresentare. E allo stesso tempo, questo linguaggio quasi barocco, è il perfetto contro peso per le descrizioni lapidarie e secche delle violenze che vengono narrate.
In tutto il racconto si sente l’amore e il legame che Saviano ha con questa terra, un sentimento però tradito dalle brutture che esistono e persistono, in ogni capitolo, in ogni storia raccontata. Ed emerge infine, l’importanza della conoscenza. Del sapere, del parlare, a discapito di tutto, per andare avanti e lottare, per essere degni di essere umani.
“E così conoscere non è più una traccia di impegno morale. Sapere, capire divine una necessità. L'unica
possible per considerarsi ancora uomini degni di respirare.”
È importante? Come scopriremo alla fine, direi di no.

This is a great book - the writing style is dry, which is fine for what is a terrifying description of Camorra and organised crime in modern day Italy. It covers the new Camorra and the new business lines it is entering, expanding internationally to extend its reach to an extent that is mindboggling.
Saviano shows us how it permeates everyday life, how a certain life style can become something to aspire to for children who do not expect to live beyond 30 and discuss as a matter of fact which type of violent death is more desirable (shot in teh face, if you ask).

(read for class) i was a little more intrigued by the earlier chapters where it felt like saviano was actually experiencing life in naples (i.e. when he helped unload boxes), but it felt more like random names being thrown around as he grew to be an observer
