Awkward writing the result of bad translation or awkward writing? I'll never know.
I got an advance copy of this and it was thrilling. Beyond what we deem investigative journalism since the author is living it; it certainly takes away the mystique and allure of an Italian vacation (not that reading The Economist hadn't already been chipping away there). It is a tragedy--no one chooses their homeland and many feel for it regardless of the problems created by a minority. His grief is palpable but doesn't interfere with the big picture: corruption left unabated will bring down every institution that we look to for things of common value. And look what was right around the corner. The mafia dressed up as investment bankers wrecking the world economy. It won't be long now--no trash pick up in DC for how long...it's funny with the mafia at least you know the risks--can't pay back the loan--broken legs or a gunshot. Not a global meltdown. That we (or most of us) lost in. Ah, the free market. Hope he survives: Rushdie did. But that was God and not money. We know who is truly worshipped.
Gomorra da miedo, asusta saber como funciona el mundo por dentro, como está podrida la moda, la gestión de residuos, la mozzarella, inmigración, la construcción, ... Lo peor no es pensar que Italia es así, es que suena demasiado conocido a como es España. El capitulo largo sobre la guerra de los clanes es bastante pesado, pero en general el libro es muy interesante y creo que imprescindible para conocer el mundo en que vivimos.
Tengo pendiente ver la película pero no sé de que tratará, el libro es muy periodístico y no encuentro una línea fácil para contar una historia.

I don't know if it's the translation or the author's relative youth when this was published, but the purple prose is almost comically bad: going for poetrt or pathos, it always comes up corny.
The reporting is obviously deep and interesting, even if somewhat fictionalized. But it's presented in a confusing fashion, via disparate vignettes that sometimes connect amd sometimes don't, all with odd author insertions of his own mindset at the time.
The names and event timelines can get downright confusing at times. All in all it definitely reads as a very young writer struggling to grasp the immensity of this thing in front of him and never quite succeedimg. Straining a little too hard.

You know how, when you look up places on Google images, you get the most important landmarks, historical sites, parks, etc. If you look up Casal di Principe (hometown to one of Camorra's most important criminal clans - the Casalesi), all you find is pics of mafiosi, policemen arresting criminals, captions from news about the Camorra and some pics with Roberto Saviano. THAT says a lot about the place and the book itself as well.
There was nothing particularly wrong with the book - it just wasn't what I was expecting it to be and I wasn't interested in what it was.
