Like the original Snow Queen but ten times better featuring a f/f romance and a feminist twist!!
This book has a talking Raven named Mousebones and if that’s not all you need to know to make you read this, I don’t know what will. However allow me to try and review greatness!!
The story follows the original fairy tale, The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, closely only instead of the forced “love” between Kay and Greta we get real love between Greta and Janna and therefore a much more interesting story and ending!
Full disclosure- I’ve never wholly read the Snow Queen all the way through. However I did read a summary of it from Wikipedia, that, including many many reviews gave me the impression that the short story is a load of shit! Considering it was written but a white Christian man in the 1800’s I’m not the least bit shocked.
So why is The Raven & The Reindeer amazing.
Gerta our MC was fascinating and I’m so proud of the way she grows from small farm girl who has little to no confidence and is obsessed with her neighbor Kay, Cough original character cough cough, to a girl who stands tall and proud against the Snow Queen. She has friends beside her and a love who actually cares about her and isn’t an asshole!
The storyline and plot was a little slow but once Janna is introduced things got a whole lot more interesting. Janna is a bandit who is sick of doing what her father says and has killed men who have treated her wrongly. She’s feisty and knows how to use a knife! Gerta and Janna get off on the wrong foot but soon they see that opposites attract and fall for eachother. Which is what should have happened in the original because these two are very clearly meant for each other.
Then we have mousebones the talking Raven who brought humor to the story. He’s so sassy and sarcastic and can we talk about the fact that the author made the Raven gender fluid, sometimes he’s a he and sometimes she’s a she. The Raven goes by she/he pronouns!!!
Like I said the plot and storyline dragged a little but the characters more than made up for it. I’ve never read anything by this author before but I’ll be checking out their work! Very enjoyable and I’m glad I read it!
