This is a truly marvelous retelling of Andersen's Snow Queen. It's an easy five stars: the characters are engaging, the writing is amazing, the pacing is perfection. There are so many extremely quotable moments here, where deep wisdom is imparted almost casually, which results in it never sounding preachy. This is my first book by T. Kingfisher, and I do believe she just became one of my favorite authors.

Fantastic fairy tale retelling.
(yep, still love it, excellent snowy weather reread)

Everything about this book is amazing. The characters stick with you and the story is so unique. I also just really appreciate when same-sex relationships are included in books as a main love story without them being the main story.

I love a good fairy tale retelling and Kingfisher always does well with them. This takes The Snow Queen and turns it into something new (and better in my opinion) while keeping the bare bones elements. So much of the classic fairy tale oddity and horror has been changed but she leaves enough to still be a fairy tale while giving it a more wholesome feel.
The characters are a delight. They are classic Kingfisher in their writing so if you find her characters tired after a few books, don't expect different. Mousebones is a fantastic companion and the romancewas a delightful surprise twist. I loved that this turned the classic romance formula on its head.
Overall not a complex read but it was very fun with plenty of humor.

A lovely retelling of the snow queen tale, steeped in self-discovery, love, compassion and some excellent animals. I really enjoyed following Gerta’s growth throughout her adventure, and her connection to all the animals and plants she meets
