It has some really pretty art and some good ideas, but the plot was too boring and predictable.

‪Beautiful and brilliant. I see influences of Watership Down, Neverending Story, Lord of the Rings, and then also mythology steeped throughout. As someone who has loved reading Karl Kerschl’s The Abominable Charles Christopher, this feels like a modern successor to that as we get darker in the woods, following a group of mice trying to survive after the humans have gone away.‬

‪Really and truly a gorgeous book with a story that will draw you in and invest you in the journey that these characters are on. ‬

Craft - the art of fucking gorgeous and does a great job of capturing the characters as well as the world. The writing is very solid as well.

Characters - the rodents are fun. While a number of the characters fall into certain archetypes seeing those archetypes as cute little animals (or big scary ones) is pretty fun and interesting.

Conflict - the plot itself is standard but is underlaid by the fact that you are seeing this through the eyes of small animals who don’t have an understanding for what has happened we and what humans have done, which adds dramatic irony and tension which work well throughout the story

Context - because if the dramatic irony the rules of the world become very interesting. I think my favorite part was the Possum’s story and the explanation of disaster from an animal’s eye, which really highlighted the spiritual aspect of this society which I found fascinating
