Believe it or not I have never read a Benedict book before despite several of them being on my lists.

This was a creative and fun read- the messaging is a touch heavy handed but not in a way that makes the story hard to enjoy.

I definitely found myself engaged in the mystery and finding out who did it. Once I got into it, this one was a page turner.

Perfectly entertaining. I don’t know that I’d recommend it per se, but I wouldn’t dissuade anyone who mentioned reading this one.

This was an enjoyable book. It's from the perspective of Dorothy Sayers and very loosely based on a true story. I like my historical fiction to be more atmospheric, evocative and gritty than this, but I mainly enjoyed it as an ode to Golden Age detective fiction. Benedict is clearly a fan, and there are a lot of little Easter eggs, including famous authors as characters, like the Agatha Christie, that are enjoyable if you also enjoy that genre. It was also a good mystery on its own merits, though I guessed most of the twists. The book is especially interested in the nebulous role of women in society in the interwar period. The characters experience more freedom than they would have before WWI, but it comes at a price.
