To a degree (given that this book is the first in a series), this book feels like a "set up book" that's designed to introduce the basics of the central character (Harry Bosch, a Vietnam vet with authority issues). That said, it's still a decent enough read.

It sees Bosch investigate the death of a Vietnam vet colleague, and morphs into an FBI investigation of a bank raid, after Bosch links one investigation to another. It rattles along at a decent rate, and is generally good fun. My big grumble is it stretches credibility in places (what are the chances that Bosch would really know the victim), while feeling a little obvious, at the end (the are a couple of twists at the end that any experienced mystery reader knew had to be coming).

So all in all, it's a good start, but it is that, a start.

I picked this up as some light relief as I find Michael Connelly books so engaging and easy to read, and this didn’t disappoint.

I’m looking forward to working my way through more of the Harry Bosch books chronologically
