God this is so much more incesty than I remembered. Truly so much ridiculous drama, how did these kids manage to be so whiny and annoying when the stakes were so goddamn high? Also, I didn’t realise how unwaveringly loyal to the Law Jace was, he’s kind of a bootlicker which is disappointing to say the least.

Also, Clary and Jace (and everyone else tbh) suck so much more than I remembered, they’re genuinely so dumb? I know that they get better the more they develop and the more their relationships develop, but god this was rough.

On the other side of it, this is genuinely a really fun world, and a good introduction to it. Sure, there are one million plot holes and a lot of prejudices and moral iffiness disguised as traditionalism, but overall, the idea is solid, and the world is fun.

The incest is unforgivable though.

I remember reading this book in my youth and loving it so much. I tried to read it again as an adult, and while it isn’t a terrible book, it’s not well done and the story can be confusing. I feel like mostly everyone loves a good love triangle, but each party had so many flaws that could not be overlooked that it made it kind of unbearable to deal with. I found myself at times, wishing that certain characters would just go away. I will be unfortunately continuing the rest of the series, but for people who have read this book before or the series before you know how weird it gets. And the book is decent. If you’re looking for a read that doesn’t really require too heavy of involvement this could be amazing but if you’re looking for a fantasy world that’s better built and the story is more fun, I wouldn’t suggest you pick up this book.

CW: Incest (b/w MCs)

For the love of sanity!!! Tell me beforehand if there's going to be incest. I choked on my water for atleast 30 mins. It mentally disturbed. Can you imagine you rooting for a couple all along just to find out that they're siblings??? Eww!! My disgust was immeasurable. I'm so mad about this. Istg, I never seen anyone mention about this major thing anywhere.

The plot was flat at worst. I'll read the second book just because I want to know what happened to them afterwards. Also, I'm only reading this to understand the new books in the shadowhunters series. It's like a chore to me. I'll change my view if the author get rid of this incesty thing in the next book.

Given that the Mortal Instruments series is rife with lore, world building, and characters, it makes sense that Clare stretches this series out. It was kinda a drag to read this and it makes me feel like we go from one event to another without pause.

It feels like a lot of details are just dumped onto you, without letting all this new  information soak in. I would be normally fine with this, since I'm mostly into the characters for a good ol YA novel.

However, I felt that they fell flat and I really couldn't care what happened to any of them. It just felt meh. I can see the potential in the MI world and I love how Clare builds them up. So points for potential.

3.5 / 5 C-
