As an eldest sister, I was hooked from the very start. The characters were complex and loveable, with heartaches I could feel in my own chest. I enjoyed Cleopatra and Frankenstein, but I loved this one! I look forward to reading more from Mellors.

How can a book contain so much pain? Such a realistic novel of 4 sisters. The epilogue had me sobbing.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as I thought I would. The description and online recommendations made me think it was going to be like a modern day Little Women, but I found the characters hard to connect with. I wasn't aware going into it that one of the main themes would be addiction which maybe why I personally didn't feel connected to the characters because we didn't have any shared experiences. I don't usually enjoy books with multiple perspectives and this is an example of a book which I can explain why this is. The alternating chapter perspectives meant that the characters couldn't be as deep as I wanted them to be. I disliked reading from Bonnie's pov because she didn't feel as developed as Lucky and Avery. It was almost like she was just the second oldest that liked to box and not much else. The scenes when she was boxing didn't pique my interest at all and her relationship with Pavel felt a bit random and for the sake of it for me. I was most intrigued by Nicky's character and would have liked to see more details about her. I think Mellors purposefully made Nicky only available to the reader through the girls' memories and thoughts to highlight her absence and their grief, but I was interested to know her more. Although, this again shows how no one will ever know her as her sisters did - no one in their universe, let alone a reader of the novel. As a sister myself, I was longing for more details of relationships and dynamics between the 4 of them. There were some lovely lines and descriptions but I wanted more. Overall it was enjoyable and a quick read for me.

Although I kind of enjoyed the book, the clichés make it lean closer to 'chic lit'. It's a bit predictable.
