really beautiful and poignant writing - there are lots of lines that stick with you after you read them and i love coco’s attention to small details. i thought the overarching undulating relationships between all of the sisters was really well done and realistic, and as someone with a sister i completely understood how much they bickered. the dialogue was also very immersive at points where it almost feels like you’re not even reading.

that being said, i’m docking a star off because it felt too perfect and overdone in some spots, almost as if it was written for television. it needed a slightly sharper edge occasionally. i could have done without the epilogue as the ending. i personally think the explicit scenes don’t really add anything to the book or contribute to any character development. also even though i understand the weight of being the eldest sister, avery is such an unlikeable character for me.

anyways, i think the book is at its best in the simple moments like the childhood flashbacks. a very enjoyable read.

In Blue Sisters, Mellors beautifully captures the different ways in which Avery, Bonnie and Lucky handle (or don’t handle) their grief over the fourth sister Nicky, including how it affects their connections to each other and how grief changes them individually over time. There’s a lot of love, and much calling out the ugliest flaws of the people these women love most.

With four women, there was a lot of ground to cover on each character, but the space was well spent and this was done quite well; although each sister took on a cliche role in their family, you learn more and more about the character around those roles as the story goes on. Really beautiful.

Really enjoyed this! A beautiful exploration of family bonds, the different forms addiction takes, and navigating feeling lost, only to realize that feeling lost is the only way to be found again. The characters felt lived-in and specific, and their relationships were all very well-realized. I definitely recommend!

  • Their parents have never been great.
  • Avery is the eldest sister, and she is an attorney living in London in with her wife. She is also a recovering heroin addict.

  • Lucky is the youngest. She is a model & living in Paris. She is dealing with her own addictions - drugs, alcohol, etc.

MY THOUGHTS
  • How is this my first Coco Mellers book?! Such incredible writing.
  • There’s so many great topics covered in this book - generational trauma, the roles we take on in families, chronic illness, addiction, sibling love.
  • The characters are nuanced, complex, messy, & real.
  • Loved the settings & descriptions of the different settings.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐️⭐️beautiful writing + amazing. I will never forget this read.

Thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine | Ballantine and Netgalley for this digital ARC in exchanges for an honest review. This book will be published on September 3, 2024.

This book surprised me - whilst I’d seen Coco Mellors making the rounds on social media for her first novel and this new release - I didn’t dream I would take so much from this book. She explores addiction through this upper-middle class family in a way which feels both honest and appropriately pitched to her audience. Above all else, Mellors writes with a knowing intimacy about the singular privilege of loving, and being loved by, a sister. A beautiful story, I think the Blue sisters will stay with me for some time.
