I really thoroughly enjoyed this, which was a total surprise to me as I knew next to nothing about it or its author. Exploring the lives of three sisters after their fourth sister dies suddenly and unexpectedly, this is an unflinching look at grief, sisterhood, motherhood, addiction, substance abuse, dedication, pain, love, and the complicated intersections of all of those things. There were touching quotes I knew I'd want to underline from the very first page, but the writing style was also funny and irreverent enough that I found myself snorting at several self-aware passages of narration and character interactions. These characters aren't nice people, or perfect people, by any stretch of the imagination but they feel real and they're (at least by the end of it all) trying their best, even if that looks like failing and trying again, and that felt extremely relatable.

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors was heartbreaking and definitely not an easy read, but it is worth it. Please keep in mind that this story deals heavily with addiction, overdose, and loss. It also deals with the fact that addiction itself can be and commonly is a genetic disposition with only one of the four sisters having never struggled with it because she was addicted to boxing instead of drugs.

PROS:
💊None of the addiction that is presented is the same. Each characters struggles are unique and feel more real for it.
🥊The spiral each sister had after the death
💊The way each of them comes to terms with the loss
🥊The connection found in the change

CONS:
💊The only people harder on you than yourself are the people that know you the best
🥊Lots of miscommunication
💊The mom’s absolute refusal to accept that her husband and children have addiction issues

🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬out of five smokes bummed off some random dude in Central Park
