The sisters navigate grief and female pain. I liked the way endometriosis, an often overlooked illness, and the impact of sexual assault were addresed without playing it out for shock value.

I wanna highlight the portrayal of the father, which I found powerful. He was a very big presence in the sisters life and had a huge impact on their development.
However, he was absent for the entire book.

His presence seemed to have a bigger impact on the sisters than his absence and I feel like the opposite was true with their sister Nicky.

I did find Bonnies chapters sort of boring compared to Luckys and Averys and I didnt like how some of the character traits of the sisters and their relationship dynamics were described rather than shown actually play out. I like getting to know a character throughout the book instead of reading an introduction to them which was at times quite repetitive (especially Nickys character).

The book really drew me in with its lyrical description of emotions and external and internal conflicts of the sisters.

I wanted 100 more pages of this -  a rare feeling for me. I loved the cadence and rhythm of it. As a mood reader it was exactly what I needed right now.

This isn’t a joyful or easy read in that the journey you go on with Avery, Bonnie, Lucky, and even Nicky is one of pain, deception, and brutal honesty. I found myself amazed at the distinctions and similarities woven through each sister. This story captivated me from the first pages, and I found it very difficult to put down (my favorite kind of books). Not sure this one is for everyone but recommend for anyone with siblings, or anyone who is working through grief or addiction, as all three of those are life long afflictions. Lastly I am struck by the beauty of sibling love, an experience you only truly understand if you are lucky enough to have some.

As the oldest sister of 4 girls and someone who has endometriosis, this book spoke to my soul. This book touches on so many important issues, with the sisters connection at the heart of it all.

My heart broke for Nicky who experienced this illness in a way I’m glad I haven’t. I rooted for Bonnie and honestly could have read an entire book just about her. As the oldest, I empathized with Avery. The only character I just couldn’t get on board with was Lucky. I didn’t find anything about her redeemable.

I wanted to give it 5 stars because I did really like it but I needed more. More dialogue because so much of it felt like the author telling us rather than showing us. I wanted more of Bonnie and Pavel, but that’s because I’m a romance fan. And I wish we could have seen Avery build back the pieces of the destruction she set for her life. Authors always seem to miss taking the opportunity to put their characters through therapy sessions on the page or through rehab on the page. This book was heavily focused on addiction, I’d have liked to see more into the healing piece.

With all that said this was a really good book and I’m glad I picked it up. Someone get this in front of Reese Witherspoon because this has limited tv series written all over it.

“Their family had always been good at hellos and goodbyes, moments ending even as they began. It was easy to love someone in the beginnings and endings; it was all the time in between that was so hard.”

I don’t know what it’s like to have sisters; but I do imagine it something like this. What a delightful and emotional journey this book takes you on. Blue Sisters is a character-driven novel, written from the perspectives of three sisters: Avery, Bonnie, and Lucky. Their beloved sister, Nicky, has passed away unexpectedly and they are forced to navigate life without her.

I don’t typically gravitate towards character driven novels, but I really loved this. It’s raw and emotional. The writing style had me flipping pages and left me feeling incredibly immersed into the story. I kinda hate the sisters, but I also absolutely love them. They are flawed, yet endearing. These characters feel so real it’s as if they walked right off the page. It’s easy to relate to their characteristics, feelings, and relationships. I love the way the flashbacks are worked so effortlessly into the storyline. A story of sisterhood, womanhood, pain, addiction, grief, shared trauma, and so much more.

“We're your sisters. Whatever you do, we're ultimately on your side. You could kill someone, and I'd help you sneak the body back to us and fill a bathtub with hydrochloric acid so we could dispose of it discreetly.”
