Absolutely loved this book. I started it this morning and finished it this evening. I loved that it covered heavy topics and really focused on the flaws of the characters and how they moved forward and dealt with their grief.

Poignant and moving, this book touches on the ways grief can exacerbate addiction and self destructive patterns. It paints a complex familial dynamic and examines how family can both help and hinder you.

The character work in this book is really what kept me reading. Each sister is distinct and well rounded and has a clear voice. Their relationships are messy and they are distressingly human.

I wanted 100 more pages of this -  a rare feeling for me. I loved the cadence and rhythm of it. As a mood reader it was exactly what I needed right now.

This isn’t a joyful or easy read in that the journey you go on with Avery, Bonnie, Lucky, and even Nicky is one of pain, deception, and brutal honesty. I found myself amazed at the distinctions and similarities woven through each sister. This story captivated me from the first pages, and I found it very difficult to put down (my favorite kind of books). Not sure this one is for everyone but recommend for anyone with siblings, or anyone who is working through grief or addiction, as all three of those are life long afflictions. Lastly I am struck by the beauty of sibling love, an experience you only truly understand if you are lucky enough to have some.

I read many reviews of this book that I just did not agree with. It has been described as a book on grief and loss, or addiction and death. I think it is ultimately a book about survival and the power of love to guide you through it. It is about exceptional and complicated people who make mistakes, but who ultimately learn to trust in each other and themselves.

"A sister is not a friend. Who can explain the urge to take a relationship as primal and complex as a sibling and reduce it to something as replaceable, as banal as a friend?"

"Most people go through life never knowing what it’s like to have a calling, one that asks you to sacrifice the pleasure of the moment for the potential of a dream that may not be realized for years, if at all. It sets you apart from others, whether you want it to or not. It can be grueling, lonely, and punishing, but, if it is really your calling, it is not a choice."

"Avery had previously thought love was built on large, visible gestures, but a marriage turned out to be the accrual of ordinary, almost inconsequential, acts of daily devotion—washing the mugs left in the sink before bed, taking the time to run up or downstairs to kiss each other quickly before one left the house, cutting up an extra piece of fruit to share—acts easy to miss, but if ever gone, deeply missed."

"That was family, she thought sadly, the root of all comfort and chaos."

This was a FANTASTIC read for anyone who is experiencing the pain of grief and needs a story to relate to. I would give this book 6 stars if i could.
