A Greek/Roman historical fiction that focuses on a woman’s quest for freedom.
Her circumstances aren’t anywhere close to ideal, but unfortunately there’s not much a woman can do for herself in a society that views slavery and trafficking as normal.
Nevertheless, Amara does her best to turn things around for herself in a way that highlights how resourceful adversity can make someone. She’s cunning, she’s smart and she makes you really want to root for her.
Her relationships with the other girls is also of import. The love they share and the jealousy that festers. Highs and lows, true friendship in a world that’s built for men.
Also, I know Paris is a shit but I have a soft spot for the poor bastard :(

3.5 ⭐️ I would have given it more but I felt like not a lot happened until the end

there’s nothing particularly standout about this book. the writing is dry and feels anachronistic to the time period this is set, and the dry writing in turn leads to the characters feeling flat and dull. there are arcs that could be interesting that get blunted by the poor prose that surrounds them, and for all of the brutality and violence, none of it ever feels like it means anything. a disappointing read compared to its premise
plot:
amara is a slave girl sold off to be a whore following the death of her father. she is unsatisfied with her lot and through a series of happy accidents she finds herself with better clientele and a wealthy patron. she brings fellow whore dido with her, stirring up some jealousy amongst the other prostitutes, and she also helps out with some loan sharking with her pimp, seeing money as the ultimate goal. there is a slight romantic interest with a fellow slave but this feels stunted and rushed. eventually amara finds rufus, who pays to go on dates with her, under the premise of them falling in love. eventually, he frees her, with the goal of her being his concubine, but dido is killed in a bar fight as a result of infighting between the brothels of pompeii

I read it. It was okay.
Honestly, I’m really sad that this book was so disappointing to me. I was excited for it. But,I knew that Cressa was going to die, and I figured out that as soon as Amara was free, she would lose Dido permanently. The ending reads as this could have been a standalone and that is how I’m going to treat it. The language was also a little too modern for my tastes (why are we using girlfriend/boyfriend in a book about Ancient Rome and prostitution???) I also felt like Amara was being forced into this trope of “forced girlboss in the face of weakness” and it did such a disservice to her character because she is a strong woman but it felt harped on.
Honestly, I’m really sad that this book was so disappointing to me. I was excited for it. But,
