I'll give this a 3.5 ⭐ it's a difficult book for me to rate honestly. I was interested in the plot but not rushing to pick it up. I enjoyed the depictions of the women being each other's support, how they interact, and having each other's backs even when they can be jealous. The story is graphic and shows how little they are valued so it's not an easy read but really shows history. I enjoyed the ending, that even though good things could happen, the harsh things are louder. The characters were complex, but they were doing what they had to survive, so admirable in a way.
Holy. Fuck.
one of the most intense books i’ve read, the ending is phenomenal oh my god. i don’t think i’ve ever read a book as angry as this one. 10 out of fucking 10.

The writing style was good but didn’t suit time period. It felt too modern in the vocab the author used. I loved the strong female characters but doesn’t mean that this book is feminist which this book had a few questionable moments. However, I did enjoy the story so very likely that I read the second because you really root for the characters
4.25 ⭐️ This is a great book.
I loved reading about what it was like in Pompeii and I cared so much about the characters.
Amara is such a strong character in a desperate situation. The female rage I felt for the girls in the brothel felt so real and was at times hard to read but there was hope between the girls too. They all looked after each other even when they had nothing.
The ending did feel a little rushed.
I’ll be reading the next book asap!

Interesting and complex characters. Touches on the dehumanization of slavery. Favorite aspect is the women’s relationships and how they are affected by their social status.
