This book was so gut wrenching and beautifully painful. Reading about how these women lived and were treated, what they had to lose to stay alive, it was all so sad! Amara was a great character to follow and all the she-wolves had so much depth. All the relationships, if it be the friendships or rivalry between the she-wolves, the complex relationship between she-wolf and master, to the relationship with the she-wolves and their patrons, were nothing I’ve ever read. They were so complicated, emotional, and human.

I admired how the author didn’t sugarcoat the writing and gave the crude details of these women’s lives. It really put everything into perspective. My heart sank any time something good happened to them but the women felt they couldn’t even enjoy it.

I picked up this book at a local book shop in my area. My curiosity was piqued as soon as I read the words prostitutes and Pompeii on the back cover and just knew that I had to purchase this book. As an archaeologist and historian, I enjoy reading historical novels, and was not disappointed. I loved this book! It portrays the realistic life of enslaved prostitutes in Pompeii about five years prior to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. I appreciate that the author does not avoid or sidestep the harsh realities that these prostitutes faced, and enjoyed the small day-to-day mundane things that a person would encounter in the city of Pompeii. For example, the author mentions the fast food joints, thermopolia. She also makes use of swear words, which are found graffitied all over Pompeii from ancient times. All of these small details help the reader gain a sense and image of the city as it functioned back then and can relate it to experiences in our modern world as well. It makes the characters relatable to us today. There are thematic elements that could be triggering to the reader, but I believe that the author does a great job of balancing these issues out without being too vulgar or unnecessary. I also appreciate that the author does not magically make everything PG or force a happily-ever-after as that was not always the case with enslaved individuals during this time in history. This is book one of three as far as I know. I am not aware of a fourth one yet and I have only read the first one so far. I am excited to find out what happens to the characters in the next book!!
