Writing my review after I've read all three books in the trilogy.

It's a good introduction to the characters and the setting. Very grim indeed. But the female characters are so diverse and complex, they aren't strong to the point they can kill and fight everyone who wrongs them, and they aren't weak to the point where they have no control and wallow in self-pity. These are women being and doing what women always had to do, in the worst conditions. They had friendship and love, even during the worst of times.

So this book just kinda popped up on my radar and I hadn’t heard anything about it. I got the whole series and they had been sitting in my library for a while when I started really locking in. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The story is tragic, and frequently hard to read. The author does not flinch to depict some of the disgusting things people have lived through throughout history. I liked the ensemble case of she-wolves. The plot was sort of meandering for the first 60% of the book imo and didn’t really pick up until the section with Pliny a good ways through. Overall I liked the setting I liked the characters. My biggest complaint is that towards the end the plot spirals way out of control or really the bounds of the rest of the story. I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a strong historical fiction offering.

Whatever crazy shit Amara is about to do in the next book I stand by 100%
