Amara was once the beloved daughter of a doctor, but then her family fell on hard times. She has since been sold into slavery to a man she hates and forced to work as a prostitute in Pompeii. She finds herself surrounded by women just like herself, with the same hopes and dreams. She finds strength and courage in this and works tirelessly to claw her way to freedom.
This isn't the type of book I normally reach for, but I'm really glad I did. I loved the themes of sisterhood and the strength of women. I loved all of the girls and rooted for them to get their happy endings against all odds. I even loved the morally gray realm Amara was forced into (I blame her for nothing. She did nothing wrong). I'm really thrilled that this is a trilogy because I absolutely must know what happens next.
While we are spared gritty details, I do want to note that the sex slavery and trauma caused by it are both discussed thoroughly in this book. Content warnings should definitely be considered prior to reading, because there is a generous amount of upsetting content in this book.
If you have any interest in what the lives of Greco-Roman women may have been like then I truly cannot recommend this book enough.

An engaging book with an interesting premise. The female characters were easy to love or at least understand. I think the ending felt a bit rushed, but I imagined it was to raise anticipation for the sequel. Personally, I enjoyed my reading experience of the book alone and won't be continuing the series.
