Good but not great

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. The story balances mysticism and mystery with drip feeding answers and deeper understanding. Characters are a bit simple but not one note or quite predictable. I'll definitely check out the next one.

That was seriously good. I always feel compelled to temper my enthusiasm for books because I am afraid my friends won't like them as much as I do which shouldn't really matter. We all like different things, so for this one I won't temper.

Loved the space opera aspect, enjoyed the politicking even though I usually don't. Loved Ean, loved the sci-fi/magic (yes I can admit the main premise of this book is magic, not sci-fi). Really loved the character interactions, something about forming bonds is right in my wheelhouse lately. I haven't had the time or desire for years and years to waste a whole day reading, which is sad, but I am extremely glad the stars aligned for this book.

Yes there are nits to pick but we will pretend there aren't. 5 un-tempered stars.

Solid space opera, not unlike Jupiter Ascending, and maybe more coherent. No regrets. 3 stars is probably too many, but 2 stars seems like too few. Why no half-stars, Goodreads?

Recommended to me by Lena, she sold the concept of the series as being similar to [a:Anne McCaffrey|26|Anne McCaffrey|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1323715139p2/26.jpg]'s Brainship series, smart ships in space with singing? I'm in!

That said, the world building is immensely more details in Dunstall's Linesman, in a society where all travel is based around a set of Lines which run through each ship enabling them to travel through the void safely. Ean Lambert is a certified 10, with a reputation as a madman who sings to the lines. Everything changes when an Alien ship is discovered at the edge of the galaxy and Ean finds himself overwhelmed with the discovery of line 11 and lines who sing back to him.

There's a lot more political shenanigans and intrigue going on in the background, I found myself losing interest in all of the plotlines and just wanting to learn more about the Lines!

This book was fantastic. A great military, yet not military, space opera!!
Characters were so well written. This is one of those books that as you read, you are actually watching a movie in your mind.

This was a good read, engaging and complex, but left me wishing the writer wouldn't repeat himself so often about things I understood, and would explain some of the politics and motivations more thoroughly.
