Nope.
I thought the idea behind this was great—tell the story of The Iliad from the POV of minor (and major) characters—but the execution is just bad. The technique adds nothing to the story except some moralizing and unsubtle passages about how war is awful.
Just read the Iliad and save yourself the aggravation.

Obviously, i had to give this book 5 stars beacuse it’s just the Iliad in prose, re-written to be more understandable by contemporary readers!!
It’s just sooo beautiful. It has a quite a lot of raw description that can be found hard to read sometimes, but I honestly enjoyed them ahahah.
The beautiful part of this book is that the author decides to change from a third person narrator, to an internal narrator, who changes often.
I obviously already knew the plot but it still made me very emotional

[...]Per questo, oggi il compito di un vero pacifismo dovrebbe essere non tanto demonizzare all'eccesso la guerra, quanto capire che sono quando saremo capaci di un'altra bellezza potremo fare a meno di quella che la guerra da sempre ci offre. Costruire un'altra bellezza è forse l'unica strada verso una pace vera. Dimostrare di essere capaci di rischiarare la penombra dell'esistenza, senza ricorrere al fuoco della guerra. Dare un senso, forte, alle cose senza doverle portare sotto la luce, accecante, della morte. Poter cambiare il proprio destino senza doversi impossessare di quello di un altro; riuscire a mettere in movimento il denaro e la ricchezza senza dover ricorrere alla violenza; trovare una dimensione etica, anche altissima, senza doverla andare a cercare ai margini della morte; incontrare se stessi nell'intensità di luoghi e momenti che non siano una trincea; conoscere l'emozione, anche la più vertiginosa, senza dover ricorrere al doping della guerra o al metadone delle piccole violenze quotidiane. Un'altra bellezza, se capite cosa voglio dire.

I love the Greeks, nevertheless I enjoyed Bariccos work very much and hope many young people approach the classics trough this memorable version.

Personalmente, amo la penna di Alessandro Baricco, che ho conosciuto con Seta.
Ho apprezzato lo stile stringato, il lessico comune e comprensibile, la riscrittura asciutta. Ho acquistato questo titolo sapendo che le apparizioni degli dei fossero state tagliate, per questo probabilmente, al contrario di altri lettori, non sono rimasta affatto delusa. Apprezzatissima la postilla sulla guerra ideata dallo scrittore, a conclusione di questa bellissima opera.
Consigliata per chi volesse essere cullato, con una voce vicinissima alla nostra, in una storia di passioni e di sangue, di vittorie e di dolori, nella grande guerra tra Achei e Troiani, combattuta da eroi memorabili nell'ira e nelle ambizioni. Piacevolissima lettura, breve e profonda.
