Probably more like 3.5 stars. I found itmore interesting in the second half, but I'm not sure if I'll ready any more. The different types of supernatural beings was interesting, and the mystery of things was decent, but I am not really a fan of the setting around a religious church/cult, even if the main character is no longer a member.

Excellent beginning

I think I missed a Yellowrock book but it did not detract from this story at all. Nell is like a baby laying to walk. She has no idea what she is but is smart and open to ideas outside of her upbringing. The paranormal aspects are interesting and I'm happy to see Rick .

I love seeing more of Rick and his were-maker. Our lovely main character's background is fascinating, and her powers are going to be so cool to see unfold.

This is one of the best Series Book 1 I've ever read. Love the main character Nell, I enjoy the mystery of what she is. A great strong character without being annoying. I like the Team Eighteen members, though as in the Jane Yellowrock novels Rick is an jerk. I can't remember why he can't shift, but hopefully that can be resolved, otherwise he will just not develop and keep being a jerk. I like that the author didn't go super deep into the other characters, leaving plenty to be explored in the following books. The tempo was perfect, the details pertinent, the cult details and hangups fascinating. Throughout the changes in her life and situation make sense and are not unrealistic. Can't wait for book 2, checking for pre-order option right now!

It took me a while to get into the Jane Yellowrock series. In contrast I was much more into this spin off series. I believe Ms. Hunter's writing has evolved and matured. However, I have not yet fully connected with the characters in this series.

I have never been much of a fan of Rick and I do not like Paka at all. I felt like this book was trying to make them more palatable. Ugh. But, I could overlook them. I would like to get more of Pea and Occam. At this point, Occam does not seem to have much character other than to follow around Nell and track things.

Nell, on the other hand is an interesting character. It will be fun to see how Hunter allows her to discover her powers and herself. Not sure how I feel about her family. I just can't be sympathetic to a system that allows abuse to happen and doesn't stop it. The whole, "our bad, now we are gonna try and stop it" thing doesn't sit well with me.

Still, I liked the story for the most part. I will see where the series takes me.

Very good. Very different feel from the Jane Yellowrock books, even though there’s a lot of crossover of characters and setting. Will read the rest of the series.

Interesting spinoff on the Jane Yellowrock world.

4.75 stars. I was afraid this would be one of those times a much-loved author took a side trip that turned sour to my palate. I had nothing to worry about. Though this new series starts out slowly and I have no love for Rick, the wealth of characters and plot twists have left me eager to get started on the next book in the series :)

I love this series and even though it's in the same world as Jane Yellowrock it feels different. Great characters and a unique magic. CW throughout.
