a fun comforting re-read! i suddenly felt the desire to revisit this for the first time in around 20 years. really fun! i'm keen to make my way through the rest for fun. i like the trope of these books each having new gadgets that come into play for each story. chekhov's gadgets.

Good, solid, middle grades novel that will appeal to boys and girls with a desire for action and intrigue. The ending felt rushed, but Horowitz knows how to write a decent cliffhanger that sets things up well for the rest of the series.
PS I know this is supposed to be similar to James Bond, but I could help thinking it was like Alias, but with a 14YO boy as the protagonist. That's likely because I can't recall ever watching a Bond film/reading Ian Flemming's work but watched Alias religiously.

If you know a 12-14 year old boy, this book is a must. The first in a wildly popular series, pass this on to a reluctant reader and you'll be glad that you did.

A fun read, nothing mind blowing but just as enjoyable! Reminds me of the books I used to get read to me as a kid so it's pretty nostalgic which I think is why I enjoyed it more.

I got hold of the audiobook from my local library as I was quite curious to see what this series was about as Alex Rider seems to be everywhere and even seems to have earned a TV deal.
The book is fast paced and once you get started, you want to see where the story goes, but, goodness me, what stereotypes of macho male and subservient or evil female are served in this book.
And the abuse Alex Rider goes through in order to become a super hero? is emotional, mental and physical abuse throughout the pages of this book and a new generation of defunct male that is incapable of love and relating is born.
A narrative that goes on the storyline that the only way to become better in being abused in every possible in order to better the abuser is no solution at all. It only leads to where we are now on this beautiful blue planet, with nature being destroyed, people in power demonstrating their selfishness throughout and relationships and society falling apart and mental illness soaring sky high.
I do not recommend this book.
