These short stories engrossed me immediately. Some were simple yet beautiful, many were painful and heartbreaking, but all were relatable in some way, windows into the human experience of ordinary and extraordinary circumstances.

The emotion and emotional impact that Alice Munro packs into a short story is masterful. I would read a full novel about almost every character and every story.

I don't think Alice Munro could write a bad story if she tried. And this collection is exactly why I think she's one of the best writers writing today.

Alice Munro has a propensity for diving into the seedy underbelly of the human condition with her writing; exploring our addictions to love, to abuse, to our own insecurities and to other various parts of life that seem unimportant to those around us. This was my first foray into reading collections of short stories and with only one story in the collection that I genuinely disliked I was not disappointed. I plan on checking out more of her work in the future.

5+ - Wow. Was not expecting these intense and often shocking storylines. Her characters are impeccably written. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature for a reason. Big fan.

Splendid short-story collection. I always say I'm not a great fan of short-stories but some win me over. Munro's stories don't feel short, they feel almost like mini-novels. I found this less gloomy than the Moons of Jupiter collection and loved the audiobook narrator too.

Very good collection of short stories, most set in Canada, most dealing with characters later in life. I enjoyed these but I don't know if I fully understood all of them.
