3.5 stars. A breezy read that told an interesting story and inspired me to hike more.

Very compelling, here for the authors honest and accountable retelling of her self destruction following the death of her mother. Not really my vibe overall, but a great memoir.

The ending is a bit abrupt - after all the times she mentions her feet, I really wanted to know if she did any permanent damage?  Just one of the questions I have rolling around in my head.

I read this book for the first time in 2018, while traveling alone for the first time, road-tripping through New Zealand. The perfect setting for this book, which I immediately loved, ranked five stars, and considered a personal fave.

Six years later, I wondered: was it great or was I simply a 24yo travelling, reading the right book at the right time? Basically, was this as good as I remembered? Well, good news is: it's better.

Such a beautiful memoir about strength, hiking, friendship, loneliness, nature, forgiveness, grief, and finding oneself. You just get lost in the pages and Cheryl's journey. A friend of mine jokingly said "who needs personal development bullshit when you can read this book" and I agree wholeheartedly.

After reading this, you feel like you've met all these people, especially Cheryl. I've just finished rereading it and I miss her already haha. The last paragraph alone gets me teary eye just thinking about it. I got mad reading negative reviews (the number one indicator, for me, that a book deserves a spot on my favorite's shelf).

Truly such a wonderful memoir!! <3

"It was all unknown to me then, as I sat on that white bench on the day I finished my hike. Everything except the fact that I didn't have to know. That is was enough to trust that what I'd done was true."
