To everyone who raved about this book and told me that I HAD to read it… how did you not see that twist coming? Hated the main character, felt like it was completely predictable but I did appreciate the effort the author made to tie so many elements together especially when it came to incorporating elements of Greek tragedy and acknowledging some of his favourite authors in the text. Overall, not horrible. I still enjoyed it but why is this book considered the epitome of all thrillers. Just did not understand the hype.

I am a hard reader when it comes to plot twist, I always see them coming. I will honestly say this book I did not see the twist or could not even guess the ending. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend. It was shocking, I’m still thinking about it. Very fast easy read, kept interest, enjoyed from a medical field and standpoint also. An overall A++

Wow. Okay. I REALLY wanted to like this one. The first half kept me on my toes, the mystery and pacing was irresistible. And then the ending turned out to be such a let down. Predictable and anticlimactic. PLUS my major qualm with the book is how the author writes his characters.

The way the male narrator describes the female characters and in turn the way the author writes women veers into misogyny. There are a number of likable male characters mentioned in this book and they have substance. Every woman is either a martyr or a monster.

They all fit into a different stereotype one way or another. Every woman mentioned is a victim, a bitch (calls women this multiple times), or motherly. And their characterization goes no deeper than this. I noticed this about halfway through the book. It’s also worth mentioning, the story heavily takes place in a mental hospital, and somehow all the patients are women.

So, unfortunately, this highly anticipated read became quite a chore to get through for me.

Worryingly relatable at times.

I'm gradually adding books I've read in 2021 to give a true reflection of the books I've read since keeping records.  In January 2021, I kick-started my reading journey having put reading on the  back burner whilst bringing up the children only reading when on holiday, having previously being an avid reader. It's a dark psychological thriller with an unexpected twist.
