I have once again been sucked in by the sneaky little surrealists and their pretty writing, only to be taken on a journey to who-knows-where.
This started out so strong. 92-year-old women make great main characters and Marian and Carmella were silly and entertaining up until they suddenly weren’t at the center of the story anymore? I know, this is what I get. If I seek out the bizarre, I’m going to get it. But I just couldn’t follow all the Goddess and Holy Grail lore that was plopped into the prose halfway through. Maybe I’m just slow.
Marian’s inner monologues were so fun that I would’ve been perfectly entertained with a book just focused on her daily life. She was funny enough without all the chaos that happened in the second half of the story.

Very fun, very funny, very zany, with an incredibly well-drawn narrator. Although its trajectory farther and farther off the rails is exactly what makes it such a unique delight, it ultimately also limited the extent to which I could fall in love with it. Definitely will read more of Carrington’s work in the future.
