"...they're quoting academics on the matter, which makes it even funnier - as if having letters after your name suddenly gives you licence to talk even more sweet bollocks. Silly sods. People just want to believe in something bigger than all this. Something beyond. It takes them away from the mundane details of their tiny lives. You can't blame them.'

This is all in reference to the work of our two protagonists, namely, crop circles. That said, I have taken this segment because it could be applied to any number of circumstances today.

Nominally this is a book about two blokes who in many ways couldn't be more different but in others are mirrors images. They are the sorts of people who know each other intimately, and it is one of the rare books that shows what real male friendship is like, what real male emotions often are. It's a book that gives you perspective on a galactic scale, perhaps inviting the reader to allow a little more humility in their lives, whether that is on the grander scale of the 'fake' crop circles or the minute interactions of our heroes.

I only took issue with one segment of the book that became too didactic, well, more than the rest of it. In particular it was the bit talking about climate change and plague, where one of the characters mentioned 'toilet paper' shortages in an apocalypse. This was a bit on the nose and ruined my suspension of disbelief. Aside from that, brilliant.

A beautifully-written book about nature, inspiration, art, and clandestine creation.
