it was amazing i had seen the movie a long time ago and loved it but the book was even better
I watched the movie years and years ago so I knew the basis but reading this as an adult just breaks my heart. :( such a beautiful story about friendship.
fast-paced
Very moving, particularly Jesse's relationship with his dad.
this is a reread, i read this book maybe 3+ years ago
it most certainly shows its age with some topics, fatphobia, casual child abuse glossed over
i did massively enjoy that part where Jesse stopped disliking Leslie for just being a girl and got over that pretty quickly! I know a lot of young boys like that stop seeing girls as friends and start seeing them as females, it can be quite disturbing. I think, despite it's problems (which if you are a parent or teacher you can explain why they (e.g fatshaming) are bad) i think this is a great book for kids to read, like 8+(as the characters are about 8-10 throughout)
ending:I admit while i liked this book then and now i still was never that connected to Leslie, this book is simply too short to get super attached to her for me, but i was felt sad for Jess
themes:i don't know why but i was expecting way more on religion and Leslie dying and Jess thinking she'll go to hell because she didn't believe in God, especially with the fuss those types put up trying to get this book banned
jess' family sucks omghis parents seem almost abusive (neglectful?) and that's kind of glossed over, but then again this book was written in 77 and that type of parenting was probably normal so... that's sad. and don't get me started on his sisters, i disliked every one, even May Belle that's always following him, she was very annoying to me lmao, Jess is having a bit of a memorial for Leslie and then his dumbass sister gets herself stuck in a tree because she done followed him smh
that one teacher Ms Edmundsyes... that was very weird. I understand the trip to the art gallery is to get Jess away from Leslie so he comes back to the news, but wow that was weird
if i ignore problematic elements, i believe this is a 4 star. with them though, maybe 3.
