✨I could go 3.75/4 depending on my mood but I overall really enjoyed this! More than I thought and more than just an average reading experiences. There are slower parts and parts where the science goes over my head but my intrigue never waned and it was a heartwarming story. I’m so excited for the movie adaptation!

I loved Ryan and Grace so much! I’ll be thinking of their connection for a long time even after I finished the book!

This book had me SAT. As with The Martian, a masterclass in fictional science communication.
I was hooked with the space algae and a little bummed when the focus became intelligent life, but Rocky sure won me over.

Found original review: Excellent book, just like The Martian. Science thriller with a lot of science explained well. Crazy science possibilities explained plausibly. Great fun to read and consider what could be. I love Andy Weir’s stuff.

Review on 10/15/25 completion (first reread and listened to audiobook this time versus softcover last): I’m surprised I didn’t review this previously but maybe I was afraid of spoilers. I remember
my surprise on my initial read when the alien ship appears. I double checked the book review and wondered how I missed that it featured aliens! I was impressed it was never spoiled for me. I was surprised when the movie previews (comes out next year) already mentioned aliens- takes that initial surprise away from the prospective audience.
Anyways, the book in general: I liked it a lot, thought Weir did a good job explaining complex concepts, but I think it worked out very neatly and luckily
(though he does try to address it- like how did both civilizations end up there at the same time?)
. Anyways I remembered certain parts and general plot but not everything so I enjoyed my reread and I enjoyed it as an audiobook. I feel like it does add to the story since
Rocky communicates with sound to hear the background chords behind the message.
Enjoyable sci fi book. I also really like The Martian (book and movie) by Weir but did not like Artemis unfortunately.
