It has a fantastic, truly imaginative world (eternity, decay, preservation…) that I wish more people were coming up with. I truly admire the creativity and the details. Unfortunately, that isn’t enough to stop it from being dead boring. I felt that characters (besides Jacob, really) and the meandering events were put in to have a blurb. Hey! We can’t win them all. I would not recommend this book.

Almost finished it. Amazing characters, great setting and worldbuilding, zero plot. And not reason for the sliver of plot you're given. Would have loved something a bit more character driven, but this road trip quest with little explanation and completely insane variations in tone and expectation fulfilment was just too much. Didn't look like it was going to have a satisfying ending, so I DNF'd.

Such a weird, crazy story. I kept thinking about Tim Burton´s Bride Corpse the whole time :D even though besides the skeletons and the afterworld it did not remind it at all. It was cool. I got lost couple of times in the story but I loved the end.

It was definitely an interesting concept, which is why I picked it up. The story just dragged on and on, though, with so many new ideas and characters haphazardly thrown in that it could not hold my interest. I tried, I really did, for weeks to struggle through the book. In the end, I just didn't feel that it had been worth the effort.

Bizarre!
I got Tim Burton vibes!
Not for everyone but I do recommend it!

This book is full of fascinating ideas but, sadly, it falls completely flat in plot and character development. The story meanders from place to place with no real momentum and no resolution. The central character really wants to get back to the Lands Above, but that's about the only perceivable character trait that we see over the course of the novel. After about 100 pages I was thinking about setting this one aside and, after making it all the way through, I think I might have been better off if I had.

There were some bits of the plot I really liked but the dialogue really dragged and sometimes it was a slog to get through.

I just could not get into this at all. By 20% feel like should care even a little bit. But nah.
