Ugh. Such a good book. I loved coming back to it after all these years. Probably part of what got me into science fiction. I’d really love to read this to my kids sometime.

Such a great book! I read it awhile ago, and I was excited to reread it. I am interested in reading the rest of the series, and I wanted a refresher on the tenets of the story.

Jonas, 12, lives in a world where everything is the same: there are no colors, no feelings, no differences. He is given the job of receiving the memories of all of these differences of the past from The Giver. He is upset and confused by all of the things he now knows, which none of his friends and family know. He wants to challenge the status quo.

I read this to my 5th grade class, and they loved it. So much rich discussion with this story.

Written the year of the birth of my first child, I am just getting to this masterpiece. Lowry's writing always gets me thinking.
