Wonderfully written. What could have been dense and dry was totally engaging and conversational. Some of the topics in the last third of the book seemed to exceed the grasp of the thesis, but overall this was an outstanding read.

If rating solely on how it made me feel, it would have been 5 stars. But there were a few claims that I found unsupported such as analyses of the human condition in prehistory. But where the author was not speculative, he was persuasive.

Human kind: a hopeful history
rutger bregman

While i was looking for something positive and good things to think about, my friend suggested this book.
I was hoping that it would stay true to its title, a hope to see the fellow humans in a different.
There is a lot being said, done, act these days about mental health and also the perception on a human being.
From the time, we are always asked to see the goodness in the people. But how you can do it??? when you yourself doesn't have that vision or angle?
In history, there are many instances we could go back and see the goodness. But taking an event where the most horrific, henious crimes are being done.
Retrospecting that and underlining how is it done? might be really difficult.
Reference to the world war 1 and 2. Mind set of the people who are normal people until the war has started.
what was the mind set of the german soliders in the nazi camp?
Nelson Mandela was not only having the patience, he has the art of making his enemy also a part of the decision making.
he always understands the reality of the bringing all the people together.
How our nomadic way of living in the past was keeping us healthy and ease of comfortable.
We never were an individual species, as individuals we have certain traits but most of them are insipired or copycat of our people.
The more we are closer to a person, culture there is less hatred.
But we all feel the opposite many times. our individualistic nature is always framed on the negativity which was showcased.
Staying away from news is the biggest take away. the news media doesn't give you a time to process your own thoughts.
They are fabricating news to spread hatred. Whatever the people are creating is more than a director of a movie.
when there is some wrong news has been aired, they never have the courtesy to correct it at all.

This was a much better/different book than I thought it'd be. I was expecting some cheerful history book, but it's more highlighting common myths/studies that were popular and had actually been proven false. It also discusses what we can do as humans to actually help create a better society, be it policy or our personal interactions. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys non-fiction or books that make you think critically.

This is one of the most influential non-fiction books I have ever read. This book is genuinely packed with fully-researched and captivating information. It was refreshing to read the goodness in humanity and this book genuinely challenged my own views and beliefs in such a positive influence.
What also made such an impact on me was Rutger Bregman’s narrative voice, he injected his own humour in to the book where appropriate, and it was a genuine joy to read.
I would highly highly recommend this, I think it is so accessible too and the audiobook is also worth a mention. I have Utopia for Realists now added to my tbr which I'm hoping to read very soon.
