I really thought this was going to be a gay love story...

Disappointing conclusion. Everything before the climax is pure perfection.

I read 73 pages if this book and gave up. The writing is not bad, it’s just not compelling enough to make me want to invest more time in it.

On one hand, the author shares his coming of age/adolescence into adulthood journey and while describing a very specific time/culture/geographical área, he manages to make it universal. Who hasn’t lost themselves into obscure music/literature/films at that age? On the other hand, it was too generic and bland. It was adding anything to this genre. It was “been there, done that” for me, instead of “wow, this is a unique perspective”.

Reread because I love this book so much.

feels weird to write a review of this book. it was more for Hua and Ken and i'm but an interloper into their friendship and its afterlife. it was a worthwhile read.

i was at a talk hua gave and he acknowledged how many self-owns he included in his book which helped make his college self seem less annoying than I found him. but hey, college is cringe for many anyway and Ken made him cool.
