i loved this. it was heartbreakingggg and beautiful and such a captivating story. never have i related so much to someone with such different life experiences.
Hsu writes so vividly about the feelings of being young.

The book does so well capturing a time and place, even when it’s impossible to capture a person in that space in the same way

it was so interesting to read about male friendship, which I feel like i've never done before.

whenever someone talks about zines im like fuccccckkkkkk i should have been a 90s kids even though I know so well i never would have made one / probably wouldnt have even known what they were. im just not cool like that

interesting memoir, but it ended kind of stupid.

I've read a lot of immigrant stories and a lot of tragic stories where I'm at the point that everything is blending together. While the writing was restrained yet purposeful I didn't feel like Hsu brought anything new to the table.

I did love the subtle character development as time passed. Hsu was able to let it emerge from the writing organically rather than hit the reader over the head with it.

This wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was insightful.  Hua touches upon just about everything: music, family, grief, college, counterculture....everything.

okay no one told me this book was incredibly sad

this time I cried on a plane!
