The book explains how poor Jewish immigrants were forced to work to little pay and terrible conditions. Clara's story is inspiring, but the book never discussed the fire that occurred just two years after this strike.

Brave Girl falls into the trap of much non-fiction for children: it zooms out too much to try to tell a longer story, but the narrative loses compelling detail as a consequence. By the end, I felt like I hadn't learned much or learned to love any of the people in the story.

"Clara knows in her bones what is right and what is wrong." After immigrating to America, Clara finds work at a garment factory. She soon discovers the deplorable working conditions, and begins to try to figure out how to make things better for the workers. Clara works all day, then goes to school at night. She learns to read, and learns to stand up for her rights as well as the other workers. Clara organizes protests and walk-outs which bring with it many consequences. Thanks to Clara and her efforts, working conditions improve. A good book to supplement lessons on immigrations and American History.
Melissa Sweet does a great job on the illustrations in this book!

I usually wouldn’t review a picture book since I am beyond that reading level but this book was incredible. I fell in love with this book when I was very young and I still really enjoy it. I think this book teaches a great lesson. Bad things aren’t going to change unless someone is willing to fight for change. Clara fought until she got what she wanted. After the story ends, there is more information in the back which I found interesting. Regardless of your age, you should read this book.

Makes a complicated historical event accessible and engaging. It's more about the Shirtwaist Strike than Clara herself (sometimes shelved in bio).
