I find most British authors to be pretentious, and it was no different with this novel. Persistent overuse of complex words that brought nothing to the narrative, deliberately obtuse descriptions of the machinations of a dystopian future and an incredibly weak and diluted philosophical exploration in the final couple of chapters.

For a Full House on British literary pretentiousness, there was a baffling amount of direct and indirect references to the works of Shakespeare
