I truly wanted to like this one, but alas I could not.

Things that I liked;

The portrayal of the complicated relationship between Ernest and his father, I also liked how his father was evil, an entirely villainous person who throws people into the sea.

Honestly, this book worsened my migraine. I wanted to get into this book, it was one of my most anticipated books. The cover art was pretty, the premise was good and the writing was not my style but readable and to a certain degree enjoyable.

The plot was too condensed and the smut was all over the place (not certainly bad but presented at odd times) I just could not. The first 55 pages felt like an eternity and I just started hating every character for everything they do.

And I feel Ernes has taken the name Karakos more than the times he utilised an organ in his body called the brain. He becomes a god in the end somehow? I dunno, I might reread it after a few months to check if I would do it in a different state of mind.

A gay Little Mermaid retelling? Sign me up!

This was my first time reading a novel written by Ben Alderson, and I'm happy to say that it will definitely not be the last! This novel is about Prince Earnest, a prince with a magical voice, and Killian, a man who made a deal with the ocean god, Karakos. Alderson's worldbuilding and character development were some of my favorite parts of this book! Even with the gods, killer mermaids, and abusive parents, Earnest and Killian's tale is a heartfelt one. Yes, this book has spice, but this tale is also about recovering from past traumas and finding someone to love. Basically, I loved it!

Fyi: even though this novel is technically part of the Darkmourn Universe, you can definitely read this novel first.
