Black Diamonds is the story of Jacaranda ‘Jackie’ Riley who works and runs a struggling truffle farm in South Australia. Her farm is her world, one that is very much threatened when Xavier Antoine, a successful French Truffle farmer and heir to a billionaire fortune, moves next door and sets up shop. What ensures is a hilarious, but incredibly tense series of events in which Jackie resists every French temptation that Xavier can throw at her. But is it enough to save her beloved farm?
With exotic settings such as Xavier’s property in Southern France, and Jackie’s South Western Australian farm, it is hard not to get swept up in the romance as these two characters bicker back and forth building a mountain of sexual tension between them. With the perfect setting in France, the truffle’s aphrodisiacs properties, and Xavier’s determination to push Jackie out of her comfort zone, the chemistry between the pair is explosive.
Redgold has created strong minded and larger than life characters in Jackie and Xavier, however I wished their character development had been explored a bit more. For both Jackie and Xavier are strong headed and stubborn characters and it is this and their undoubted sexual tension and chemistry that drives the plot alone. While this works well in giving the reader some insight into the elusive and widely unknown world of truffle farming, it also works against the narrative, somewhat stalling it’s progress when the two have a falling out of sorts, as we are left with two whining characters who are too stubborn to see what’s in front of their eyes.
Full of underlying romantic and sexual tension, Black Diamonds is a feel good romance that devoted romantics won’t want to miss.
