This was so much fun! The worldbuilding is complicated and over the top, but in a way that opens up so many possibilities for the story. Dominance of magic and technology fluctuates in this world, meaning that the power balance is consistently shifting. The characters are really engaging and the action is well written. It's a little bit dated in an early 2000s fantasy way (i.e. fat-shaming a character 3 times in 2 pages and referring to an Asian character as a mongoloid). The themes are also surprisingly adult and fleshed out.  Excited for the rest of the series.

5 stars for the entertainment factor! I'm not sure what her secret is, but Ilona presented some really eye-roll-worthy tropes in a way that made me totally buy in. Magic Bites made me feel like I was a teenager again and I can't wait to continue the series!

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction/romance and is willing to look past the cover design. 🤭

NOt as good as the rest of the books in the series but enough to get your interest piqued. Has a kick ass female heroine, some strong male love interests, lots of action and banter. Definitely liked this series and interested in how the love relationships will pann out.

It was a fun start to a series.  It stands out a little from other similar series such as Mercy Thompson or The Hollows. Kate Daniel's is the heroine of the Early 2000's.  The spit fire with an attitude that's only surpassed by her ability to endure.   But Kate let's us see her femine longing too, making her relatable.  I'll likely be reaching for more stories in the series.

Urban fantasy is always like a little snack for me. I like the easy mysteries, world building and general badassery of the female characters. This was just that- except I didn’t really feel anything for anyone. You don’t know enough about the MC to even care about her, a random romance you definitely don’t care about and a mystery that was almost too easy to unravel. However; I do think this has potential, and when I need out of another reading slump; I might read the second one.
