3.5 stars. This novel of boarding school students who uncover a destructive plot is an interesting allegory of the pressure to assimilate to a strict, soul-crushing elite society. While flawed, the main characters are mostly likable and I did root for them in their collective resistance.

Interesting premise but the plot gets bogged down in too many strands and gets a bit silly

It was certainly okay.

For being a young adult book, the way it was written made it feel like a middle grade. Despite mentions of murder and possession, I felt like I was reading a book that was meant for a younger audience.

In general, I’ve read books like this before, and it was alright. I can see someone else really liking this book, but it wasn’t for me.

I think some of the problem with this book is that it was marketed to me as speculative fiction/mystery/thriller when it’s actually sci fi/action/horror - but even that aside, I sent a message to some book friends with a plot summary and got back “…is it a parody?” It just gets too silly, too convenient, too fast
