Like a lot of kids' book series, this first one is not the best. The world of the later books is not solidified yet--some human things (but not humans) intrude. But it is the one that started it all and it captivated me when I was 12. Kids are not as demanding as some of the Goodreads reviewers. There is adventure and laughter and good overcoming evil and this is a good read! I liked the Squirrel family best. Jess, the mum, is a great climber and slinger and the one everyone turns to to get things done and her husband is just quietly supportive and proud and says "oh she is amazing!" It was a refreshing family dynamic to be exposed to as a young girl!

I feel like as one of the first fantasy books I read as a kid that I really connected with when I read it the first time. It wasn’t necessarily a magic system or an even a large world build, but truly just a simple little country fantasy with little animals who run their little abbey. I do feel like I don’t connect with all of the characters but I truly find that I do love the heart of all of the characters. I solid reread.

I found it very odd. It got really dark at times, but was pretending it wasn't dark because the characters were animals. I also got uncomfortable by how the other species were often described.

rather violent for a kid's book . I would have appreciated a bit more nuance, some repercussions for all that violence, perhaps. But perhaps I'm asking too much from a kid's book. I really enjoyed the world of the Redwall abbey and it's surroundings.
