This book was all world building and setting up for the next two books. It was slow in the beginning but the last 10% was great setting up for the next book where I think things will get going.
Is Kennit going to fuck the ship???

Having read all of Fitz’s books, I was hesitant to read any more of Hobb’s books- how could I return to her world without him. But I was duly convinced and thank goodness I was!
This trilogy starts out far darker than I feel any of her Fitz trilogies has started, with the concept of the Liveships themselves both fascinating and chilling me. But as ever with Hobb, it’s all in the characters, all of which I now care for deeply such that I have flipped straight on to book two. There are many mysteries to be unpicked yet...

Robin hobb writes masterly as always and has created a very intriguing world where I just want to know everything about the lore. Give me more liveships, rain wilds and serpents. But while this book was so so well written and I have alt faith in Hobb, it was honestly not a very pleasent read. Disliking half the characters and really having a rough time with the sexism of the characters just took it out of me. It was ROUGH to get through. The amount of times I've yelled at all the characters while on my way to work, lol! I will keep on reading because I'm very intrigued and because I want to return to Fitz.

Positives:
- I adore Althea & cannot wait to see where her journey goes in this trilogy… she’s so Lilah Bard from ADSOM meets Vin from Mistborn meets Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean & I’m fucking with her heavy.
- I also am super intrigued by Vivacia; she reminds me a lot of Lady Amalthea from The Last Unicorn.
- the whole concept of the magic of liveships is so unbelievably cool & unique and creative & I honestly can’t wait to see how this series goes & how it ties into Fitz/The Fool’s story!!!

Negatives:
- this book ultimately was soooooooo slow and repetitive and did not need to be nearly as long as it was? I understand that it was building up this world/these characters/the trajectory of the next two books but I sincerely feel like a lot could have been cut out.
- most of the characters (except for Althea & Vivacia & Althea’s mom) I hated honestly. Kyle was absolutely insufferable to read from (I understand that we are meant to not like him, but the book bordered on unenjoyable at times because of how often he was present). Malta also sucked (in her defense, I get that she’s just a child), but she very much reminds me of an annoying as spoiled little girl who absolutely would have been played by Bailee Madison in an early film 2000’s adaption of this story ahaha. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of Althea’s sister either, though I do sympathize with why she’s the way she is. Pretty much every other male character in this also made me cringe?? & don’t ask me to tell you a single thing about Kennit’s POV’s because I didn’t understand or care!
- The moments of romance in here were also deeply cringe to me & felt very written by a man?? I just need every man to stay away from my girls Althea & Vivacia quite frankly…. (Though Wintrow & Brashen are like alright I guess)
